Why is Kargil Vijay Diwas Celebrated at Nelson's School?
In May 1999, Pakistan soldiers and armed intruders secretly crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and occupied several strategic mountain peaks in the Kargil district of Ladakh (then part of Jammu & Kashmir). These high-altitude positions gave them an advantage and threatened India's security.
To reclaim these positions, India launched Operation Vijay. Despite extremely difficult conditions—including steep mountains, freezing temperatures, and enemy fire—Indian soldiers fought with exceptional courage and determination. After nearly two months of intense fighting, the Indian Armed Forces successfully recaptured the occupied positions. On 26 July 1999, India officially declared victory, making this date a symbol of bravery, sacrifice, and national pride.

The celebration began with a special assembly dedicated to the heroes of the Kargil War. Teachers introduced the significance of Kargil Vijay Diwas in a simple and child-friendly manner, explaining that in 1999, brave soldiers of the Indian Armed Forces fought fearlessly in the mountains of Kargil to protect India's borders. Despite facing extremely difficult weather conditions and dangerous challenges, they displayed remarkable courage, determination, and selfless service, ensuring the safety of the nation. Through this inspiring story, children learned that true heroes are those who put the happiness and safety of others before themselves.

Tiny hands enthusiastically created beautiful Indian flags, patriotic posters, soldiers, and tricolour-themed artwork that reflected their imagination and appreciation for the country's brave defenders.
